Here's Some Helpful Self Storage Tips

Choosing Your Unit

Call storage companies within the local area you wish to be. Find out what size units are available. Compare prices and vacancy information. Ask if they'll reserve a unit on the phone. Choose the unit size that best meets your needs. Meet with the manager and discuss the price, any current "SPECIALS", deposit and rental agreement.

MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND WHEN YOUR RENT IS DUE!
How It Works At A Bargain Evans Holly Self Storage:
All rents are due on the first day of the month. Since not everyone can always meet this deadline, we have a 10 day grace period. After the tenth of the month, a $10.00 late fee is charged. We are always here to work with you on payments should you hit some "hard times".

Failure to pay rent on time will result in:
$15.00 late fee charges assessed one day after due date!
Another $15.00 15 days after due date!
$50.00 inventory and sale fee!
Assessment of a lien and AUCTION sale of your stored goods!
So after 16 days you owe X amount in rent + $80.00

Ask about security features of the facility. Get a business card, contact information and ask about the access hours of operation for the facility.
Inspect the unit that you will be renting. It should be clean, well maintained and secure.

Planning

Make a list of all items you plan to store. Ask if they have locks you can purchase, or if you can furnish your own. Gather boxes and packing supplies. Remember that you may need large boxes for lamps and other decorations, plastic sheets for covering furniture, china cartons for dishes and bubble wrap/fill paper for packing valuables. Make arrangements for transporting your items to the storage facility. (Ask about truck size restrictions, if any)

Packing

Use only sturdy boxes and containers for storing your items. Label all containers and boxes. Fill containers to capacity and fill in space with packing material. Pack heavier items in small boxes. Place mirrors, paintings & pictures in blankets or sturdy boxes, and pack them on edge.
Dissemble lamps, tables, barstools and other furnishings as applicable. Wrap pieces individually and store securely in boxes. Wrap wooden table legs and chairs to avoid scratches. Cover sofas with plastic wrap or sheets so that they do not gather dust, and stack them on end. Cover dressers with sheets or plastic wrap so you can stack boxes on top. Fill drawers and appliances with items to conserve space. Pack books flat and avoid placing them directly on the unit floor (place on cardboard or a sheet) Wrap dishes and other breakables individually, layering padding at the top and bottom of the box. Clothing is best stored clean and in hanging cartons. These may be available through the storage company or can be purchased at a moving supply store.

Storing

Place items in the order that you will need to access them. Those that will be readily used should be placed in the front of the storage unit. Before moving in pieces of large furniture, cover the ground with blankets or sheets. Do not lean furniture against outside walls! Place tabletops face down on the floor. (remember to lay a blanket or sheet on the ground to avoid scratching). Leave appliance doors cracked open so that moisture does not build within. Place a box of baking soda inside.

DO NOT STORE FOOD !

This will attract ants, mice and other pests.
DO NOT STORE ANY FLAMABLE LIQUIDS WHATSOEVER !

THIS WILL TERMINATE YOUR LEASE ON THE SPOT,
AND IT'S ALSO ILLEGAL !
No Flammables - Fuels - Ammunition - Paints - Explosives - Perishables
Other Restricted Materials Include:

Bottled gas of any type. Paints, varnishes, solvents, thinners, oils, corrosives, explosives, ammunition, gasoline, kerosene, nail polish remover, lamp oil, sterno, ammonia, bleach, aerosol cans regardless of the content, matches, lighters, chemicals, chemistry sets, cleaning fluids, cologne, fertilizers with ammonium nitrate, fire extinguishers, fireworks, flares, food of any kind, furniture polish, lighter fluid, perfume, starter fuel, tanks of compressed gas, and any other type of combustible materials.

Arrange boxes so the labels are facing out and easily read. Stack boxes in a manageable manner. Put large, heavy boxes on the bottom. Leave a walkway so that you can access your items as needed.

Removing

Give the storage company proper notice of your intent to move out. Refer to your contract for specific guidelines. Remove the top boxes first. Careful...boxed items may have shifted after a prolonged period of time. Remove all of your belongings. Sweep out the unit and dispose of any trash. Have the manager do a walk through inspection to insure that there is no dispute over damages or cleanliness.
Secure the unit. Make sure the door is completely shut. Take your lock with you. In most cases it belongs to you. Inform The Manager Of Any Change In Address Or Phone Numbers. This Will Ensure Your Deposit Will Be Returned To You Faster.
